FCCU to Support Ronald McDonald House & Sunshine Hospitality Home

04/03/2023

The second quarter fundraising cause, as chosen by FCCU staff, are the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Sunshine Hospitality Home. Each quarter FCCU’s 260 employees choose an organization to support by raising money and awareness.

To support this organization, staff will be holding a pop tab collection at each branch as well as an internal silent auction fundraiser, dress up days, jeans Fridays and volunteering when possible.

The Ronald McDonald House and the Sunshine Hospitality Home provide a place of comfort for families who must travel when their kids need medical care. Families have a place to rest near medical facilities, receive care and support resources, and connect with other guest families. All provide temporary housing with private rooms; other services vary by location and may include:

  • Full kitchen and stocked pantries
  • Laundry facilities and supplies
  • Open shared living spaces and play areas
  • RMHC volunteers prepare a meal each evening and have baked goods available

The shared visions of the houses are to serve as many families as possible while their kids receive medical care, to keep families together in a homelike environment and to minimize the financial impacts. Depending the house, families pay a small cost per night if they are able or financial assistance is available.

Charities like Ronald McDonald are very special to many, including our staff. Below is a testimonial from Clay Greenwood, Risk Management Specialist, about his time at the Ronald McDonald House.

"In mid-October 2022, my wife and I added our sweat baby girl Eloise to our family. When Eloise was 1 day old, we were told that her oxygen saturation levels were alarmingly low, and we had to have her life-flighted to Fargo where they were better set up to treat her.  Being a first-time parent is scary, add on your child having to go into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and it can send you into a downward spiral. At that time millions of thoughts were racing through my head, and I was just trying to be strong for my wife. Shortly after we got to the hospital in Fargo, a social worker recommended us as candidates to stay at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley. Our stay was relatively short, at just under a week, but it meant so much to our family.

Eight months later we have a happy and healthy little girl, and I want to say thank you.  Thank you to the Ronald McDonald House, and their staff.  While my daughter was getting the best care possible you provided a safe place for my wife and I.  A place where we could care for each other, and decompress from our daily stresses.  A place where we did not have to worry about meals or where we could go do our laundry. A place for us to do the small things, that helped keep us sane.  A place we started referring to as home, before we could go home.  I have always known about Ronald McDonald House Charities, but I never truly understood the amazing work they do. I also want to thank First Community Credit Union, it means the world to me that my work family chose to support this wonderful organization, that has become near and dear to me."

Special thank you to all our staff, members and local communities for their support to these quarterly charities.
