Steve Schmitz Inducted into Credit Union House Hall of Leaders

Steve Schmitz, president and CEO of First Community Credit Union, has been nationally recognized for his leadership in the credit union industry with his induction into the Credit Union House Hall of Leaders.
Schmitz was among 18 leaders honored during a ceremony held March 3, 2026, in Washington, D.C., during the America’s Credit Unions Governmental Affairs Conference. The Hall of Leaders recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the credit union movement through leadership, service, and long-term impact at the local, state and national levels.
Schmitz has dedicated more than two decades to First Community Credit Union. He joined FCCU in 2000 and became President and CEO in 2010. A native of Harvey, North Dakota, Schmitz brings a background rooted in hard work and service, having grown up on a dairy farm, earned his degree from North Dakota State University, and served in the U.S. Air Force.
During his tenure, FCCU has experienced significant growth. Schmitz has overseen several strategic mergers, including a major expansion in 2018 that added 12 branches as well as the successful integration of Elm River Credit Union in 2022, all while maintaining a strong member-first focus. Under his leadership, FCCU has grown more than five times its size and surpassed the $1 billion asset milestone.
The Credit Union House Hall of Leaders distinction highlights individuals who help shape and advance the credit union movement. Honorees are recognized for strengthening the cooperative financial model and championing the mission of credit unions, often described as people helping people.
Schmitz’s recognition places him among a distinguished group of industry leaders whose work continues to influence the future of credit unions nationwide while reinforcing the role of First Community Credit Union in supporting members and communities across the region.
