First Community Credit Union, is proud to announce their support alongside 19 other North Dakota credit unions to help fund the new Credit Union for Kids Micropreemie Unit at Sanford Children’s in Fargo.
This new unit which officially opened on May 15 is designed to provide critical and specialized, developmentally appropriate care for babies born before 26 weeks gestation or weighing less than 28 ounces.
The Credit Unions for Kids Micropreemie Unit features four private rooms, and six beds designed specifically for micropreemies—babies who require the most delicate medical attention and compassionate family support. This innovative space not only enhances medical care but also fosters a supportive environment where families facing similar challenges can connect and find comfort.
Dr. Jacob Fish, Chief Medical Officer at Sanford Children’s, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the credit unions’ vital contribution. “We are incredibly grateful for the donation by these credit unions to turn this micropreemie unit from a dream into a reality,” Dr. Fish said. “This micropreemie unit will serve our most fragile and vulnerable patients and help set them up for success on day one. This unit is another example of Sanford Health’s commitment to providing world-class health care close to home.”
The collaborative effort between the credit unions, Children’s Miracle Network, and the Sanford Health Foundation culminated in a cumulative pledge of $500,000, underscoring the community’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of its youngest members.
Steve Schmitz, President/CEO of FCCU, emphasized the deep importance of this project. “Supporting this Micropreemie Unit is more than a donation—it’s a commitment to the future of our community’s children. We are honored to partner alongside other ND credit unions and with Sanford Health in providing specialized care that gives these tiniest fighters the best possible start,” he said.
The new Micropreemie Unit exemplifies the profound impact that community-driven support can have in transforming healthcare and further reflects the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People.”. Families in North Dakota can now take comfort knowing that critical, expert care for micropreemies is available close to home, reducing the stress of long-distance travel during such a challenging time.
